Origin

Jammu & Kashmir
A union territory in the north-western Indian Himalayas where public programmes have introduced aromatic crops such as lavender to hill districts, with small-scale distillation capacity.

Indian Himalayas
The Indian Himalayan region spans India's northern states and union territories; its temperate valleys and high-altitude slopes support aromatic-plant cultivation distinct from lowland production.

Growing region: Temperate hill zones of the Indian Himalayas. Lot-level origin (district, producer group, season) is declared on batch documentation.

Notes for formulators and buyers

Reference profile

ISO 24255:2025 specifies a chromatographic profile for French-type clary sage oils; published literature shows wide variation in linalyl acetate, linalool, germacrene D and sclareol content across origins and chemotypes. Because a Himalayan-origin oil will not necessarily match the French-type profile, we publish no generic range and instead report the lot GC-MS against the buyer's target specification and, where requested, against the ISO profile.

Regulatory touchpoints

Salvia sclarea oil is not itself an entry in the EU cosmetic allergen list, but its constituents linalool, geraniol, terpineol and others are declarable above the Annex III thresholds; the batch allergen declaration reports them. Clary (Salvia sclarea L.) appears in the FDA list of natural extractives at 21 CFR 182.20.

Supply status

Clary sage is grown in temperate zones of the Indian Himalayas at smaller scale than lavender, including on farmers' fields extended under public-sector aromatic-crop programmes. We qualify lots as they become available and are explicit about quantity: contract requirements above what regional supply can document are declined rather than filled from unverified sources.
