Lemongrass Essential Oil

Botanical species confirmed per lot · Poaceae

Steam-distilled lemongrass oil sourced from northern Indian foothill cultivation. The Cymbopogon species is confirmed and declared per lot, and citral content is reported on the batch GC-MS against the buyer's specification.

Origin

Indian Himalayas
The Indian Himalayan region spans India's northern states and union territories; its temperate valleys and high-altitude slopes support aromatic-plant cultivation distinct from lowland production.

Growing region: Sub-Himalayan and foothill zones of northern India. Lot-level origin (district, producer group, season) is declared on batch documentation.

Reference chemical profile

Reference ranges — ISO 3217:1974 (Cymbopogon citratus); species-dependent. Orientation values from a public standard, not results for any Himalayan Botanic lot.
Constituent Reference range Note
Citral (geranial + neral) ≥ 75 % (C. citratus, ISO 3217) ISO 4718:2004 specifies C. flexuosus separately; Indian C. flexuosus selections report citral up to ≈ 85 % in peer-reviewed trials
Geraniol — Reported minor constituent; level depends on species and chemotype
Geranyl acetate — Reported minor constituent
Myrcene — Reported minor constituent
Limonene — Reported minor constituent

Batch-specific GC-MS available with qualified commercial samples. Target specifications outside the reference range can be discussed at the RFQ stage.

Allergen declaration: constituents typically relevant to EU cosmetic allergen labelling for this oil include citral (geranial, neral), geraniol, limonene, geranyl acetate, linalool, and the oil itself, labelled “Lemongrass Oil” (Annex III entry 354, applicable to products placed on the EU market from 31 July 2026). Declared values are reported per batch.

Notes for formulators and buyers

Species declared per lot

Lemongrass oil in trade comes from more than one Cymbopogon species. East Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is specified under ISO 4718:2004 and carries CAS 91844-92-7 / EC 295-161-9 (INCI CYMBOPOGON FLEXUOSUS OIL). West Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is specified under ISO 3217:1974 and carries CAS 8007-02-1 / 91844-92-7, EC 295-161-9 (INCI CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS LEAF OIL). The generic CAS 8007-02-1 is shared, so species cannot be inferred from the CAS number.

Rather than assume a species, we confirm it for each lot from source records and chemical profile and state it, with the matching identifiers, on the batch documentation. Buyers with a species-specific requirement should state it in the RFQ.

Regulatory touchpoints

Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1545, lemongrass oils (C. flexuosus, C. citratus and C. schoenanthus) become a declarable fragrance allergen labelled “Lemongrass Oil” for cosmetic products placed on the EU market from 31 July 2026, in addition to constituent allergens such as citral and geraniol. Both C. citratus and C. flexuosus appear in the FDA list of natural extractives at 21 CFR 182.20.
